Dr. Sera Fernandez, Psy.D.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Sera Fernandez, Psy.D., graduated with a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University (NSU). She is currently completing her doctoral internship at the Federal Medical Center Fort Worth working with incarcerated individuals who present with a range of acute and chronic mental health concerns. During her time at NSU, Sera completed practicum placements focused on child/adolescent mental health and trauma.

Sera obtained her bachelor’s degree from Stonehill College where she double majored in psychology and criminology. She then completed a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Roger William University within a forensic mental health counseling program. While in her master’s program, she interned at a prison for individuals incarcerated for sexual offenses and later transitioned into a full-time position conducting assessments and providing treatment recommendations. This work inspired Sera to continue her education and pursue a doctoral degree.

Sera’s training includes work with individuals across the lifespan in community and confined settings. She has experience working with various mental health issues, including trauma, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, depression, anxiety, substance use, and personality pathology.

Sera’s areas of focus include legal issues, trauma, and body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRB). She hopes to eventually practice equine-assisted therapy to assist in the treatment of BFRB, which was the topic of her dissertation.

Outside of work, Sera enjoys spending time with her family and at the barn. She has two beautiful boys, ages 6 and 2, with her husband who is a forensic psychologist. They are animal lovers and have several pets including dogs, a cat, and a horse.

Sera grew up in Saratoga Springs, NY, and began riding horses in childhood. As an avid equestrian for many years, being around horses remains an important aspect of her life. Whenever possible, Sera also enjoys traveling with her family, especially to tropical places.
